New executive director will leverage history and experience for the next generation of programming for those facing social isolation
Milwaukee (July 23, 2010) – One Heartland today announced after nearly 20 years of service as the Founder and CEO, Neil Willenson, will be passing the torch of CEO and transitioning to a new volunteer role working with active volunteers and key supporters, while transferring daily executive management duties to Patrick Kindler, One Heartland’s current Director of Program Services.
“As I enter my 20th year in the HIV cause I am amazed at how Camp Heartland has grown into an organization far beyond my initial dreams, now as One Heartland. The one-week of camp that we put together back in 1993 for a group of kids affected by HIV/AIDS has become a year-round operation for hundreds of children, youth and families affected by socially isolating circumstances including HIV/AIDS. I am looking forward to remaining involved in One Heartland as its Founder and will be a passionate advocate for years to come,” stated Willenson.
Willenson will stay involved with One Heartland as chairperson of the new Founder’s Council, a group of active volunteers and supporters who will be dedicated to ensuring One Heartland’s financial security and continued innovation. Willenson resides in Milwaukee with his wife and two children. Outside of working with the council, Willenson has accepted a position as Vice President of Community Relations at a leading manufacturing company in Wisconsin. In his new role, Willenson will be able to continue his work in philanthropy and community organizing.
With Willenson’s departure, One Heartland’s Board of Directors has extended the position of Executive Director to Patrick Kindler of Minneapolis. Kindler is currently the organization’s Director of Program Services and oversees all program development and operation.
“I am confident in Patrick’s ability and commitment to carry-on the important work that I began in 1993. It’s an exciting time for One Heartland; our work is more important than ever and I look forward to being a part of its future,” added Willenson.
Kindler, a graduate of the University of Minnesota, has been a leader in the nonprofit sector for 19 years. A current board member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondolet Foundation and an Adjunct Professor at the Albany School of Pharmacy in New York, Kindler’s experience in program and curriculum development, multi-cultural education, and outdoor education make him a natural fit for the position.
“Patrick is an excellent candidate for helping One Heartland to leverage its 18 years of camping program delivery for children most in need to new audiences facing social isolation and stigma. We are very excited that he has accepted the position,” stated Jeff Maiken, President of One Heartland’s Board of Directors.
